Havana Film Club 5
Every week (give or take) the employees of Spirit Level Film come together after work to watch short documentaries together. A different SLF worker chooses the films every week. This is where I let you know what we thought of them.
Welcome to the fifth edition of Havana Film Club. This week it was Luca’s turn. Luca is the Spirit Level Film accountant, a smooth talkin’ Aussie and all round good guy. I headed across to the supermarket to get a few tins of lager, a bit of rum, some crisps and a couple of tubs of hummus while Luca got his movies ready.
He chose two films. The first was called ‘The Madman and the Cathedral’, directed by James Rogan.
I love Don Justo Gallego Martinez. His dedication to his life’s work is admirable, even if he is probably completely nuts. In fact, I like him even more because he is probably completely nuts. He draws incredible strength and belief to reach his goals, and that to me is pretty aspirational, no matter where you are drawing that strength from.
We all thought Rogan did a great job with the film. Apparently they fell out with Justo midway through shooting, and weren’t allowed back to finish for a couple of years. However I think the film benefits from that, as we can see the progress that Justo makes over a long period of time. You really feel the madcap, disheveled and seemingly disorganized way he lives and works through how the film is put together. The film was listed by Channel 4 as 'one of the short films you need to see before you make one' - high praise, but definitely deserved.
The next film we watched was called Peter & Ben, directed by Pinny Grylls of Invisible Film.
I think Luca decided this would be oddball week. This one really hit the nail on the head for us. For such a short film, the narrative felt so complete and cinematic, which I guess is strange juxtaposition when you consider the less than glamorous setting. I kid you not; this one proper had a couple of the girls in tears. We all thought it was great.
The sign of a good documentary is one that leaves you really thinking after long after it has finished. For a short time after this particular film was over, I ruminated on the logistical demands of keeping a sheep as a pet. I came to the conclusion that it wouldn't suit me whilst I live in an urban environment. Maybe one day in the future though.
